3 home remedies for weight loss, gas, acne, etc. that actually work (and 3 that don’t)

Must read

As Indians, we have grown up with many home remedies that have been passed down for generations. These remedies, often based on traditional Ayurvedic medicine, offer natural solutions to a variety of problems such as weight loss, acidity, acne and high blood sugar levels. But do they really work? While many home remedies have stood the test of time, it is important to approach them with a critical eye. Nutritionist Rashi Chowdhary believes that while some remedies may provide effective relief for certain conditions, others may not be as effective as believed.

According to experts, here are 3 common home remedies that don’t always work:

1. Papaya to Regulate Menstrual Cycle:

Papaya is rich in the enzyme papain, which has been traditionally used to regulate the menstrual cycle. Although papain can affect estrogen levels to some extent, it is not a surefire remedy. Severe hormonal imbalances, such as problems with LH, FSH or progesterone, require medical intervention.

2. Raw Garlic for Acne:

Garlic’s antimicrobial properties make it a popular choice for treating acne. While it can help fight acne-causing bacteria, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. If your acne is caused by hormonal imbalances or gut health issues, a more comprehensive approach is needed.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar for Weight Loss:

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has become popular as a weight loss aid. While it may help control blood sugar levels and improve digestion, it’s not a magic pill. If your weight gain is primarily due to hormonal imbalances or lifestyle factors, ACV alone won’t produce significant results.

According to the expert, these 3 home remedies really work:

1. Celery Seeds for Gas:

Celery seeds, known for their carminative properties, have been used for centuries to relieve gas and bloating. The compound thymol in celery stimulates the secretion of gastric juices, aiding digestion and reducing discomfort. However, if you experience frequent gas or bloating, it is advisable to consult a doctor to rule out underlying medical conditions.

2. Aloe Vera Juice for Acid Reflux:

Aloe vera juice, with its soothing polysaccharides and digestive enzymes, can provide relief from acid reflux. The polysaccharides form a protective layer on the esophagus and stomach, while the enzymes aid digestion. However, if you suffer from severe acid reflux or heartburn, it is essential to seek medical advice.

3. Fenugreek Seeds for Blood Sugar:

Fenugreek seeds or methi are a treasure trove of soluble fiber and the compound 4-hydroxyisoleucine. This combination helps control blood sugar levels by slowing down carbohydrate digestion and increasing insulin sensitivity. However, individuals with diabetes should consult a healthcare professional before including fenugreek in their diet. Click here to learn how to make fenugreek seed water.

Remember, it is always wise to consult a healthcare professional before incorporating any new remedies into your routine, especially if you already have any health issues.
