Actor Sunny Deol celebrates 25 years Gadar: A Love Story Thanking fans for keeping Tara Singh and the film alive in their hearts. In his post, the 68-year-old included memorable pictures, which also included those of his co-star Ameesha Patel. While Sunny played the character of Tara Singh in the film, Ameesha played the character of Sakina.

In his caption, Deol wrote, “25 years ago, mutiny And Tara Singh won your heart. The throne of love relationship has been going on for 25 years and will continue to do so in future also. (The journey of this loving relationship has been going on for 25 years and it will continue to grow further).”

She ended the note by saying, “Thank you all for giving us 25 years of abundant love and keeping us in your hearts, hope we continue to be there.”

The film and its legacy

Gadar: A Love Story Was released on 15 June 2001. Set against the partition of India, the action drama follows Tara Singh, a Sikh truck driver who falls in love with and marries Sakina, a Muslim woman. Later, when he was taken back to Pakistan, political turmoil and family pressure separated them.

The film also stars Amrish Puri, Vivek Shouk, Lillete Dubey, Mushtaq Khan, Om Puri and Utkarsh Sharma. Even twenty-five years after its release, the film remains closely associated with the performances that shaped it.

Casting and sequel

Director Anil Sharma recently told India Today that while writing the film, he had first imagined a young Dharmendra as Tara Singh. He said that the role required someone who could dance, sing, play instruments and bring humor. He said that once that idea was sidelined, Sunny Deol became the obvious choice.

Sharma said, “There was no other option to play the role of Tara Singh, and there was no better actor than him,” and added that the film showed a side of Deol that had rarely been seen on screen before.

Speaking about Sakina, Sharma said that the makers auditioned 400 to 500 women, including Ameesha Patel, before narrowing down the list to 15 or 16. He said that she practiced for long hours, came to his house every day, memorized every line and “became a perfect Sakina”.

The sequel, Gadar 2, was released in theaters on August 11, 2023 and also became a commercial blockbuster.

Deol remains active in films and has upcoming projects including batwara 1947, ace And Ramayana.
