On August 20, PEOPLE confirmed that Joey Lawrence and Samantha Cope have decided to separate from each other. The former couple first met each other in 2021 while filming Lifetime’s My Husband’s Secret Brother and eventually took their wedding vows in May 2022. The couple also welcomed their daughter Dylan Rose, born on January 16, 2023.
Everything was going well until the news of Lawrence’s extramarital affair with Melina Alves came out. This forced Cope to go ahead with the decision of parting ways with the Gimme a Break! star. After the news of their separation came out, Cope has finally decided to speak openly about it in his recent candid video shared on Instagram.
In the caption of the video, Cope explained that a good friend of hers advised her to not be afraid of tears and let them flow freely, because every single drop of your tears helps ease your inner pain, helping you move on. Despite the serious message, the caption surprisingly ended on a humorous but positive note.
The caption read, “Recently a wonderful friend of mine told me, ‘Don’t be afraid of tears. Let them flow. Because every tear is God gently squeezing the pain and devastation out of your heart to make room for new beautiful feelings.’ She also reminded me: ‘The more you cry, the less you pee’. So let them flow. You can do this,”
The video shared shows glimpses of all the happy moments of Cope in recent times, including time spent with her daughter. However, these happy moments were immediately followed by emotional moments, especially in the last few weeks. The actress can be seen crying alone in and out of her care.
“Look at you, look how far you’ve come. You’ve faced your trauma, and you’ve overcome it. And I’m sorry for getting a little emotional. But there were times when I would get really worried about you, Miss Girl. But look at you today. I’m so proud of you. You’re a survivor,” a voiceover showed in the video.

Joey Lawrence’s affair with Brazilian actress Melina Alves
Joey Lawrence shocked people after news of his romance with Brazilian actress Melina Alves broke out. This extramarital affair led to divorce for both Lawrence and Alves. According to Page Six, Alves’ husband Edward Ryder also filed for divorce and accused his ex-wife of having an affair with Lawrence. In the filing, Ryder claimed that he found out about Alves’ extramarital affair in March.
According to the source obtained by PEOPLE, Lawrence met Alves on the set of his upcoming film, Sucked In for Christmas. “Joey met Melina Alves on the set of his movie, where she was a producer. He then love-bombed her just like he did Samantha. He continued to date Melina even when Samantha found out about it and confronted him,” the source revealed.
The source also said that after Samantha insisted on counseling, Lawrence fooled his counselor and “got ready for a date with Melina while Sam watched and cried.” According to the outlet, according to court documents, Samantha cited “irreconcilable differences” as her main reason for divorce. She further marked June 7, 2024, as the date of their separation.
In addition, Samantha Cope wants full custody of her daughter Dylan Rose, as well as permission to visit Lawrence, at his discretion.
