A woman in Shanxi, China has alleged that her iPhone 14 Pro Max exploded while it was charging overnight, causing severe burns to her hand. The incident occurred when the woman, who had plugged in her phone before sleeping, woke up to find the device on fire. Due to the explosion, the phone’s blanket and a part of the room caught fire, causing considerable damage. The woman has since demanded answers about what caused the explosion, as well as who is responsible for the damage, including injuries to her hand and fire damage to her rental apartment.
According to a Chinese daily called The Drivers, the incident occurred early in the morning when the woman, whose identity has not been revealed, was sleeping. He plugged in his iPhone 14 Pro Max to charge before going to bed. At around 6:30 am, the phone reportedly caught fire. The woman, who was still in bed, woke up when she felt the heat of the flames and realized that her hand had been burnt. According to reports, she turned over in her sleep and accidentally touched her hand with fire, causing severe burns on both her palm and the back of her hand.
When firefighters arrived they found that the phone had caused extensive damage from the explosion. Video footage of the incident showed that the woman’s blanket was mostly burnt and the wall of her room was also blackened with smoke. The fire appears to have been a massive one, leaving a visible mark of damage.
The iPhone in question was purchased in 2022, and by the time of the explosion, its warranty period had already expired. The woman is now demanding answers. She is hoping to determine the cause of the explosion and whether Apple or another party is responsible for the damage. In addition to the physical injuries on her hand, the fire also caused damage to her rental apartment, which she believes could have been avoided.
Apple has responded to the claims by assuring the public that they take security issues very seriously. A company spokesperson said that, even though the phone was out of warranty, they were still investigating the matter thoroughly. Apple advised the woman to send the device back for analysis to help understand the cause of the incident. He stressed that such situations involving security risks are his top priority.
The incident comes at a time when consumer electronics safety is under increasing scrutiny, especially as more people rely on devices for long periods, often leaving them plugged in overnight. Apple’s response to this case will likely set a precedent for how similar incidents will be handled in the future.
Currently, the investigation is ongoing and both the woman and Apple are working to figure out what went wrong.
