Netflix on Monday released the trailer of its new Hindi film ‘Wild Wild Punjab’. The trailer reveals the story and creates buzz, but it also gives an indication that the story is redundant and repetitive. Directed by Simarpreet Singh, the film has an interesting cast including Varun Sharma of ‘Fukrey’ fame and Manjot Singh, Patralekhaa, Sunny Singh, Jassi Gill and Ishita Raj.

‘Wild Wild Punjab’, as the title suggests, is set in the state, featuring a heartbroken Rajesh Khanna (Varun) who decides to take revenge on his girlfriend after she leaves him and marries someone else. Unable to deal with the post-breakup shock, he decides to attend her wedding to embarrass her and vows to shout “I have surpassed you” in front of a hundred people. While Manjot’s character, Honey Singh, seems forceful, somewhat like the roles he has been playing in all his previous films, Patralekhaa’s Radha, who is portrayed in ‘Parzhai ji‘, appears timid and shy, a woman who does not understand many double meaning conversations going on around her. Sunny Singh as Maan Arora brings perfection to the character ‘Jigri Yaari‘This song will take you back to the days of ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’.

‘Wild Wild Punjab’ is made by the makers of the ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’ series and ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makka’ – films that faced a lot of criticism for being misogynistic. It will be interesting to see how the film impacts the audience. Native Punjabi spirit in the jokes and dialogues. But, it will be more interesting to see if the makers manage to tell the story without stereotyping Punjabis and young men looking for love in life. So far, it seems to be mainly about four best friends, the women in their lives and their struggle to protect their male egos.

‘Wild Wild Punjab’ is premiering on Netflix on July 10. It is produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg.
