WhatsApp is allegedly working on adding a new feature to its payment system. According to a report by the Android Authority, the social media platform is testing UPI lights, which is the feature designed to make small, frequent transactions faster and more convenient. This step can bring WhatsApp closer to competition with installed payment apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, especially in markets such as India where digital payments are widely used.
In the recent tears of WhatsApp V2.25.5.17 beta version, codes related to UPI lights were found. These wires suggest that WhatsApp is actively developing convenience, although it is still in the test phase. Since this feature is available only in the beta version, it is not clear when it will roll out for all users. Strings also suggest that UPI light payment will be limited to the main device; It cannot be used on linked equipment.

For those who do not know, UPI Light is an extension of UPI (Integrated Payment Interface) system, which is widely used in India. Unlike regular UPI transactions, which require real -time authentication and involves banking systems, UPI lights allow users to load small amounts of funds in a wallet. This wallet can be used for quick, low-value transactions without the need for frequent authentication.
The idea behind UPI light is to make small payments faster and more efficient. For example, if you are buying a cup of coffee from a street vendor or paying for a bus ride, you will not need to undergo several stages to complete the transaction. Instead, the money will be cut directly from your UPI light wallet, which will reduce the chances of failure during peak transactions. According to strings found in the beta version, WhatsApp’s UPI light feature will also offer PIN-Free Payment Options, such as how UPI Light Payments System operates on other platforms.
WhatsApp already supports UPI payment in India, but can make the platform even more attractive to users besides UPI lights. With over 500 million users in India alone, WhatsApp has large -scale viewers that may benefit from this feature. Currently, WhatsApp is not listed as an app that supports UPI lights, unlike competitors such as Google Pay, Phonepes and Samsung Wallets.
Apart from UPI lights, WhatsApp is also allegedly working to introduce bill payments on its platforms. This will allow users to recharge the utility bills within the app, recharge mobile schemes, and more.
So far, there is no official term when these features will be available to all users.
