India is taking a major step in the AI region, in which the government has invited proposals for the development of the big language model (LLM) and the multimodal AI system under the Bharat AI Mission. The objective of this initiative is to promote homegron AI solutions to fulfill India’s unique challenges while following global standards. The government wants to make generic AI models as compared to global systems such as chat.
The proposals are being accepted for six months from the announcement of the call or till the selection of adequate submissions. The evaluation will be monthly, with a review for the proposals presented by experts from India till the 15th of each month. The government has prepared a specific format outline for submission, requiring an executive summary, project plan, team details, use case development, moral compliance and a financial assessment. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to present, and successful projects will receive funds.
Union Electronics and IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnav, revealed that India has crossed its target of 10,000 GPUs by installing 18,000 GPUs as part of the general calculation facility. He revealed that this infrastructure would serve as a basis to develop advanced AI solutions. Speaking at the Odisha Atfarash Summit, Vaishnav announced that India will soon have its LLM, which is supported by the new computing facility.
The minister said that AI has the ability to resolve major challenges in areas such as agriculture, learning disability and climate change. As part of the mission, the government will engage with startups, IT companies, educational institutions and researchers and will attach to the founder AI model. Vaishnav mentioned that the first round of funding has been approved for 18 applications, with more expected in the future.
This effort keeps India to catch with global development in AI, especially following China’s success with its AI model Dipsek, which compared Openai’s chat. By launching a domestic AI model, India AI is likely to establish himself as a prominent player in space.
