US sheriff’s deputy responding to distress call shot at, suspect injured
Deputies were shot at while responding to a report of a man threatening to kill himself or others inside a home in Dixon. The shots were fired from inside the home, officials said.

Three sheriff’s deputies were shot and the suspect was wounded while responding to a home in northern Illinois on Wednesday, authorities said.
Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said deputies were responding to a report that someone inside a home in the Lost Lake community near Dixon was threatening to kill themselves or others. He said the suspect was also shot. He did not provide any information about the suspect, including name, age or where the person lives.
VanVickle said a family member called police just after 8:30 a.m. to report threats being made by someone in the home. Negotiators tried to contact the man by phone and decided to go inside the home shortly before noon, he said.
“Upon entering the home our deputies were met with gunfire from inside the home,” he said.
VanVickle initially tried to walk away from reporters after making the statement without providing further details, but in response to shouted questions he said all the injured were “in good condition.”
A spokeswoman for Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital in Dixon said three people were taken to the hospital’s emergency department, two of whom were treated and released. The spokeswoman did not provide information on the condition of the third person.
VanVickle said the Illinois State Police would investigate the shooting. The agency did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking comment.
Aerial video released by local media on Wednesday afternoon showed law enforcement and private vehicles parked along dirt roads throughout the area and officers occasionally gathering in small groups, but little activity. Yellow police tape blocked at least one driveway and the Ogle County Sheriff’s mobile command center was parked at the end of the drive.
Lost Lake’s property owners association describes the area as a “rural-style community” with about 700 owners, located in an unincorporated area close to the cities of Dixon, Franklin Grove and Oregon, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of Chicago.
