Many old movies came back to theaters in 2024 and achieved good results. Interestingly, some earlier flop films were re-released and emerged as success stories. Here’s a look at the first day box office collections of re-released films this year.
Tumbbad tops the charts with the biggest opening; Earned Rs 1.50 crore on the first day
Tumbbad, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and starring Sohum Shah in the lead, created history at the box office in its second innings. Originally a flop, the underrated gem took off at the box office in its re-release thanks to its cult fan following and good marketing.
The horror-mytho took a nett opening of Rs 1.50 crore and emerged as the biggest opener among all the re-releases of 2024. The film ended its second innings in India with a net collection of Rs 31.35 crore, taking its total box office collection to Rs. 43.85 crores, including both theatrical releases.
With such a stellar theatrical re-release, Tumbbad emerged as the highest-grossing film among all other re-releases in India.
Laila Majnu and Karan Arjun are competing for second place
Laila Majnu, starring Avinash Tiwari and Trupti Dimri and directed by Sajid Ali, was a repeat success at the box office. The film was originally a flop, although it was re-released with a challenging verdict.
Laila Majnu’s second innings started with a solid opening of Rs 30 lakh at the Indian box office, earning around Rs 10 crore in its entire run.
This tragic love story is now ranked second among the biggest re-release openers of 2024. However, the recently re-released film starring Karan Arjun is tampering with its position.
The 1995 blockbuster Karan Arjun starring Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan has earned Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh in its re-release (November 22, 2024). If we take the middle figure of this range, as its current opening of Rs 27.50 crore nett, Karan Arjun will be considered as the third biggest re-release opener of 2024. Other successful re-releases of 2024: Veer Zaara, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, Kal Ho Na Ho and Rockstar
Shah Rukh Khan’s Veer Zaara and Kal Ho Na Ho are the other two successful re-releases of 2024. While the Yash Chopra-directed Indo-Pak romantic drama opened with Rs 20 lakh in India, the Nikhil Advani directorial took an opening of Rs 12. Net of lakhs on the first day.
Apart from SRK starrer films, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein and Rockstar also performed successfully this year. Both the films wrote box office history by attracting crowds and filling seats in theatres. While R Madhavan and Dia Mirza’s film opened at Rs 20 lakh, Ranbir Kapoor’s film took a decent opening at Rs 7 lakh in its limited re-release.
