After many disappointing situations the industry is finally getting a positive Friday, Tere Ishq Mein is off to a solid start. The musical love story starring Dhanush and Kriti Sanon is progressing well, taking it towards a double digit opening day. Based on last day’s bounce and current fluctuations, it may reach close to Rs. Even 15 crores. There is also a Tamil dubbed version of the film, with a local star in the lead role, but progress there has been slow, though that may see a change one day.
The actor-director duo gave a hit film titled Raanjhanaa in 2013, in which both the film and music were highly appreciated. Interestingly, Tere Ishq Mein began as a conceptual sequel to Raanjhanaa, though that idea was eventually abandoned due to lack of rights. Had there been a sequel connection, the opening could have been even stronger. Even though this film is not a sequel or officially connected to that film in any way, there may still be some association in the minds of the audience that may help here.
The film is likely to be a hit right from the opening. The director’s style is of offbeat love stories set in the heartland, with which he gave three notable hits in the last decade, but since then, he has seen a few misses, including a big one with Zero. In such a situation, the film needs the approval of the audience to ensure a hit.
The year saw three surprise hits, one of which was a big hit in the musical love story genre. None of them boasted of face value but were entirely inspired by the hit music. Although the film stars two well-known faces in the lead roles, they are not stars, so to speak, which means that here too, it is the music that is carrying the lead. The importance of music in Hindi cinema cannot be underestimated. The decline in business over the last decade or so may be partly due to the decline in the quality of music. It is fitting that in challenging times, it is music that is leading the revival, providing the industry with an opportunity to re-learn and realign.
