Satyajit Ray’s Arni Deen Ratri should be displayed at Cannes Film Festival 2025
Satyajit Ray’s classic ‘Arani Deen Ratri’ will be displayed in the Classic section at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The screening of the film will be attended by veteran actor Sharmila Tagore and filmmaker Wes Anderson, other presenter.

Filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s most acclaimed cinematic work, ‘Arneer Deen Ratri’, is set to return to the global stage with his screening at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. The 1970 Bengali classic will be presented in a newly restored 4K version in the Classics section of the festival.
Global screening will be attended by Sharmila Tagore and filmmaker Wes Anderson, other presentors. Both will also include Purnima Dutta, Margaret Bode of Film Foundation and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur of the film Heritage Foundation.
The Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to kick-start from May 13 to French Reveria, which will celebrate Satyajit Ray’s film as part of his commitment to preserve and promote heritage cinema. ‘Arani Deen Ratri’, including Soumitra Chatterjee, Rabi Ghosh, Pahari Sanyal, Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal, is a star cast, based on Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novel.
‘Arneer Deen Ratri’ discovered the story of four friends who took a temporary place in the forests of Jharkhand. It also examines the subjects of masculinity, class and cultural disorder.

The 4K restoration of the film was obtained from original cameras and sound negativities, which was carefully preserved by producer Purnima Dutta, who also supported Ray’s ‘Gopi Gaine Baga Bai’ (1969) and ‘Pratiidvandi’ (1970).
It was first premiered in 1970, ‘Arener Deen Ratri’ got the initial global recognition with the Best Film Nomination at the 20th Berlin International Film Festival.

The Cannes Classics section will also include Sri Lankan director Sumitra Periz’s Sinhalese film ‘Gehenu Lamai’ (1978).
The iconic film festival, which will end on May 24, will witness a pile of Bollywood stars to walk on a red carpet and highlight Indian cinema on the global stage.
