Nair described how Zoharan, the Current mayor-elect of New York CityParticipated during the development of the musical adaptation of the 2001 film. He said, “Well, he has been involved in it. In earlier years, when we were doing workshops for the musical – before we found someone who could sing, dance and be comical – we did a week-long workshop, and Zoharan played the role of PK Dubey in that.”

Reflecting on the atmosphere of those sessions, Nair said, “The workshop is to sell to investors, so you have the orchestra, the singers, the actors – everyone on the microphone. Zohran performed PK Dubey, and (singer) Ali Sethi – who is like a son to me – did the singing. I remember that morning: Zohran came home with a very nice haircut. I said, ‘Yeh kaise aaya beta (where did this come from)?’ And he said, ‘Today there is a performance, we have to do a workshop.’ She picked up a polka-dotted shirt and dressed herself a little Working (Naughty), like PK.”

Nair recalled the simple arrangement of the workshop, which enhanced his son’s performance. “We started in this simple room with microphones on stands, no set or props. All of a sudden, he’s performing PK – jumping on the table, doing the whole thing. When it was finished, it was fantastic, this double act with Ali. And one of the producing investors said, ‘Who’s that guy? We’re not going to go to Broadway without that guy.’ I reminded him recently that that guy is now our mayor.

Interest in Zohran’s artistic ability was rekindled when Nair offered her the lead role in his adaptation a suitable boyShe explained, “No, no, I literally offered him the role of the suitable boy – the lead role, a suitable boyAnd then, like many of my things, if I need an actor to read with an actress or someone else, and if he’s at home, he’s always ready, but for a suitable boy—I really wanted him to play that role. And he didn’t do that.”

Zohran’s reluctance to pursue acting was evident. Nair shared his reaction: “He said, ‘A lot of people would die to be offered these things, but I don’t.’ He was the most reluctant actor. He never wanted this and I had to accept that. And I was grateful, too, because he knew he didn’t need it – people needed it to be an actor – he didn’t have that. But he has got the goods. I’ve always seen in him the charisma and ability to genuinely create joy – to connect with people on a very direct and open level. I’ve always liked that.”

There is no chance now. “He never wanted that, but I would love it if he did.”
