Akshay Kumar’s comic caper, Khel Khel Mein has earned Rs 3.90 crore in its third weekend, taking the total collections to Rs 33.65 crore in 18 days. The film has witnessed a marginal drop of 25 per cent from its second weekend, as collections from high-end multiplexes remained steady, albeit at lower levels. At one point, the Mudassar Aziz-directed film was aiming to gross Rs 20 to 25 crore, but it managed to fall short and is now looking to cross the Rs 40 crore mark by the end of its run.
Collection of in game play The film has suffered due to poor release planning, as a better release date could have increased the business by at least 30 to 40 per cent, allowing it to earn a respectable Rs 60 to Rs 70 crore, although bigger results are always expected from a star like ‘Dabangg 3’. Akshay Kumar. The team of Khel Khel Mein opted for a three-way confrontation and blew away its limited chances at the box office, as Stree 2 turned out to be a monster of epic proportions.
Khel Khel Mein was a flop, but the trends show that it has received some appreciation from a certain section of the audience, which has helped the film stay on the lower side, because like Veda, there is always a chance of it crashing and burning and ending up below Rs 20 crore in a crowded window. Of course, these numbers are not even close to the performance of any Akshay Kumar film, as any Khiladi film will release with minimal expectations of entering the Rs 100 crore club, but it is always good to find a ray of hope somewhere in the dark cloud.
The scenario of Khel Khel Mein is like that of many urban films in the post-pandemic world, but one must understand that there has been a sea change in the consumption pattern of the audience, and the film needs to appeal to a wider section of audiences than just the high-end multiplexes to succeed. There is an open run for the entire September, and distributors can play with pricing and performance to keep the cash registers ticking in the coming weeks.
