Ever since Sundar C stepped down from directing Rajinikanth in #Thalaivar173, many names are being suggested for the responsibility on social media. According to recent reports, actor-director Dhanush is considering directing this big entertainer. Although there is no confirmation from Dhanush or Kamal Haasan’s team, fans are already speculating.
A day earlier, Kamal Haasan had confirmed that Sundar C is no longer directing the project, and the production banner is looking for a new director. He said, “Sundar C has given his reason for withdrawing from the project through a press release. I have nothing to add. As an investor, I want a script for the film that appeals to my star. This is the healthy way to do it.” He said, “We will keep looking for the right stories until they like it. We will keep looking until my star is satisfied with the script. We are currently in the process of finalizing a quality script.”
Although the real reason behind Sundar’s exit remains a secret, it is said that there were some creative differences. In his statement, Sundar C wrote, “It is with a heavy heart that I share some important news with you. Due to unexpected and unavoidable circumstances, I have taken the difficult decision to step back from the prestigious project, #Thalaivar173. This venture, which is produced by the legendary superstar Thiru. Rajinikanth AVL and the renowned Ulaganayagan Thiru. Kamal Haasan AVL was truly a dream come true for me.”
For those unaware, Thalaivar 173 will star superstar Rajinikanth in the lead role, while Kamal Haasan is bankrolling it under Raj Kamal International Films. The film is expected to go on floors in 2026 after the superstar’s current commitments.
Talking about Dhanush, he recently directed and acted in Idli Kadhai and is now gearing up for the release of his third film Tere Ishq Mein with Aanand L Rai. Previously, he has directed Pa Paandi (2017), Raayan (2024), and Nilavukku En Male Ennadi Cobham (2025). If Dhanush is chosen for Thalaivar 173, it will be no less than a fanboy affair.
