India needs you: Shabana Azmi urges Sonam Wangchuk to end hunger strike

Shabana Azmi appealed to Sonam Wangchuk to end her indefinite hunger strike, saying India needs people like her to continue the fight against injustice. The actor urged them to stay healthy and said that their guidance gives hope to the students and the country stands with them.

Veteran actress Shabana Azmi has appealed to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to end her indefinite hunger strike, saying the country needs voices like hers in the fight against injustice. Sharing an emotional note on social media, Azmi urged Wangchuk to prioritize his health, and said his guidance will continue to inspire students across the country.

Azmi wrote on Instagram, “Dear Sonam Wangchuk, Our country needs a personality like you. You stand against injustice, stand for truth, we are proud of you (Dear Sonam Wangchuk, our country needs people like you. You stand against injustice, you stand for truth, and we are proud of you) (sic).”

Appealing to the workers to end their fast, he said,Therefore, we request you to break your fast because your guidance for our students boosts their morale. (Therefore we request you to end your hunger strike, as your guidance gives strength and hope to our students) (sic).”

Emphasizing that the movement needs his continued leadership, Azmi said, “This battle has to be fought further, for this it is important for you to remain healthy. we are with you (It’s a long fight, so it’s important that you stay healthy. We stand with you).”

Azmi joins the list of celebrities who have voiced support for Wangchuk in recent days. Zeenat Aman, Abhay Deol, Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Omi Vaidya and Rubina Dilaik have also supported the issue and urged him to end the hunger strike.

Wangchuk and the cockroach Janata Party (CJP) have received support from several political leaders since the protests began in Delhi on June 20. Wangchuk joined an indefinite hunger strike on 28 June.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged NEET exam irregularities. He has also demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of students who allegedly committed suicide following the paper leak controversy.

The group has announced a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20, the opening day of the monsoon session.
