India has become the largest supplier of smartphones in America, beating China for the first time, and is an apple that has made it possible. According to new data from the research firm Canalis (now part of Omdia)In the second quarter of 2025, the Indian -made smartphone shipment in the US increased by 240 percent. These phones are now above 13 percent one year ago for 44 percent of all the smartphones shipped in the US during this period. At the same time, China’s share fell down to 25 percent in Q2 2024, below 61 percent. The reason for this? A mixture of moving the supply chain, business tension, and increasing dependence of apples on Indian factories to meet American demands.
Apple has been steadily increasing its manufacturing base in India over the last few years, and this effort is now clearly paying. Principal Analyst Sanium Chaurasia, Principal of Canalis, said, “India became a major manufacturing center for smartphones sold in the US for the first time in India, which was inspired by Apple’s quick supply chain change in India amidst the uncertain trade scenario between the US and China.”
As the US and China continue to collide over tariffs and trade policies, smartphone companies have begun to rethink their manufacturing strategies. For Apple, it means to create more iPhones in India-especially standard models such as iPhone 16 and iPhone 15-when still bending on China for large-scale production of the pro model. But this balance seems shifting. In fact, Apple has already started assembleing some iPhone 16 Pro model in India, although its chief supporter production still depends on Chinese factories.
Other brands like Samsung and Motorola have also started sending more India-made phones to the US, but their contribution to this shift is smaller in the scale than Apple. For example, Samsung still depends a lot on Vietnam for most of its production. Motorola’s supply chain also lies largely in China, although it has increased production from Indian features in recent months.
The big picture here is that the US smartphone manufacturers are clearly looking to diversify that they collect their phone. Canalis analysts say that concerns on tariffs and unexpected trade rules have forced sellers to get front-load inventory (to get large amounts of inventory before before normal or anticipated requirements) and quickly adjust their sourcing plans. India’s growing role as a manufacturing base for global smartphone brands means that it is becoming a major player in this space, and not only for low-cost phones, but also for high-end equipment.
Despite this dramatic supply chain change, the US smartphone market only increased by only 1 percent in Q2 2025. The iPhone shipment fell 11 percent from year to year, while Samsung’s shipment increased by 38 percent. Motorola also saw a modest 2 per cent collision, in which Google and TCL scored the top five brands.
