House of the Dragon season 2: Will Rhaenyra Targaryen ride Vermithor?

Disclaimer: This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 2

House of the Dragon season 2 has reached its halfway mark, and there seems to be no end to the bloodshed. In the latest preview of episode 6, the main focus was on Rhaenyra Targaryen wanting to make Vermithor her own.

Since the death of King Jaehaerys I, Vermithor has been riderless and has taken up residence in one of Dragonstone’s smoking caves. Now Rhaenyra already has her dragon Cyrax, so she’s probably trying to claim the Bronze Fury for someone else.

After Maeles’ death at the hands of Aemond’s Vhagar, it’s only fair for Rhaenyra to strengthen her arsenal. But in George RR Martin’s book ‘Fire and Blood’, it’s the dragon that chooses you, not the other you.

So does Rhaenyra have enough Targaryen blood to claim the dragon? Or maybe it’s just propaganda that one has to have blood lineage to ride a dragon. Let’s see if the Black Queen can do what has never been done before.

Can Rhaenyra lay claim to Vermithor?

In the Season 1 finale of House of the Dragon, Daemon Targaryen goes into the caves to sing to the Beast. Translated from High Valyrian, his final lines were “We will fly as we were destined to, beautifully, freely.”

Vermithor is approximately 100 years old and is one of the largest living dragons, second only to Aemond’s Vhagar. In episode 5, Rhaenyra and Jace consider asking those Targaryens who had married into other houses to join their war.

So yes, Vermithor is likely to spread his wings for Rhaenyra Targaryen. According to the stories, the blacksmith’s bastard Hugh Hammer, who was introduced in the season 2 pilot, will likely ride Vermithor.

Is it possible to claim more than one dragon?

Rhaenyra’s sixth great-granddaughter, Daenerys Targaryen, claimed three dragons, even though she rode only one, Drogon. So yes, anyone can claim multiple dragons, and we’re likely to see Rhaenyra do the same in Episode 6.

More dragons are set to join Team Black, it will be exciting to see if they are enough for Aemond’s Vhagar who already has 2 dragon deaths to his name. Stay tuned for more information on House of Dragons Season 2.
