‘Fake’: Indian immigrant Harpreet Kaur exposed, Australian court finds her guilty in fake nursing certificate case

An Indian immigrant’s claims that she was duped into using a fake nursing certificate have been rejected by an Australian court, which found her guilty and described her defense as “sheer lies”.Harpreet Kaur, 33, was convicted of misrepresenting herself as a registered health practitioner in Adelaide, Australia Today reports. This case involves using fake certificates to secure nursing work in Australia.According to Christies Beach Magistrates Court, Kaur trained as a nurse in India and failed the Australian certification exam three times before receiving the document. She first pleaded guilty to the charges in 2024, but later withdrew her plea and said she did not know the certificate was fake and that she had purchased it from an online “guru” who charged her $10,000 for training and documents. In her defence, Kaur told the court that she believed the certificate to be genuine and denied trying to mislead her employer or the authorities. However, Magistrate Luke Davis rejected her account, finding that she had knowingly used a false document and lied under oath during the trial. He said there was a lot of evidence against him and rejected his scam claims. “Although it is unfortunate and notorious that people of all ages fall victim to Internet scams, there is a plethora of evidence pointing to crime,” he said. The magistrate criticized her testimony: “I do not accept Kaur as an honest witness… She was evasive and incoherent, giving ridiculous answers which I found implausible (and) absolutely ridiculous.”He also said that the certificate itself was clearly fake: “I think the document itself was clearly false, bogus, tampered with and so could easily be seen… no one could help but notice.”Magistrate Davis further ruled that Kaur was in “collusion” with an “elusive, shadowy individual” and was fully aware that her actions were unlawful.Kaur now faces a maximum of three years in prison and a fine of up to $60,000. He is due to return to court next month for sentencing.
