The Marathi film ‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’ has launched a line in Maharashtra, criticized the right -wing groups and is a leader for government investigation. The film, which offers a secular illustration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is accused of distorting history, making a call for protest and ban. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I & B) has issued a notice to the filmmakers who are demanding documentation to return their portrayal of the historical figures.
What is ‘Shivaji of Khalid’?
‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’ is a Marathi film, which tells the story of a 5th -grade student named Khalid (played by Krishak Mor), who torn her to be a Muslim by her classmates and Shivaji Maharaj’s enemy is called ‘Afzal Khan’. This inspires Khalid to discover the real essence of Shivaji Maharaj, hoping to understand whether all Muslims were the enemies of the Maratha warrior king.
Khalid learns from life experiences about Shivaji Maharaj, which praises his leadership qualities. The film shows that 35 percent of Shivaji’s soldiers were Muslims, and highlight their inclusive leadership. It has a character, stating, “A true king is one who does not believe in religion.” This has contributed to the backlash from right -wing organizations.
The film is directed by Raj Pritam More, who won the National Film Award for his Marathi film ‘Khisa’ in 2019 for the ‘Best Debut Non-Feature Film’ in the category of a director.

What is the whole issue about?
Controversy center over a deep -root ideological division on the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The right-wing groups consider him as a Hindu warrior-Raja, while others portray him as a secular and inclusive ruler who stood against injustice. A part of the audience believes that ‘Khalid’s Shivaji’ provides a perspective, questioning the traditional narratives, leading to an uproar in the state.
Center issue notice to ‘Khalid’s Shivaji’ makers
Amid protests, the Maharashtra government is considering cancellation of the film’s certificate. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I & B) has issued a notice to the film’s producers, ‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’. After public resentment, the ministers of the Ministry and the government stepped into – issuing a notice to the manufacturers, asking them to provide evidence supporting the story, dominating that they received several complaints in the case.
BJP ministers have also commented on reconsideration on the approval of the censor board’s film approval.
Objections of right -wing groups
The right -wing groups, such as the Hindu Mahasagha of Pune, have been vocal against him, the film distorted the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Protest against the film disrupted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s speech at the Maharashtra State Film Awards Function on Tuesday, August 5, where two people raised slogans demanding a ban on the film.
Anand Dave, president of the Hindu Mahasangh, said, “The film tries to distort the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The producers have portrayed him as a secular, who find us unacceptable. If the film is not banned, we will oppose the theaters where it is shown.”
Possible theater boycott
In response to the release of the film, Anand Dave further urged local theaters not to screen the film, especially in Pune and rural areas. He expressed the intention of educating the public on Shivaji Maharaj’s “true history”, if the film is shown.
“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was ours, who belonged to Hindus and Marathas. He added further.
‘Shivaji of Khalid’ international recognition
Despite controversies, ‘Khalid’s Shivaji’ was one of the few Marathi films selected for screening at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film was previously praised by Ashish Sheler, Minister of Cultural Affairs of Maharashtra, stating that ‘Khalid’s Shivaji’ reflects the voice of young minds and his discovery for identity in contemporary society. He called his ear selection “moment of pride for Marathi cinema”.
However, after the dispute, he back back. Speaking on the controversy, he later commented, “Secretary, cultural matters, will investigate how the film was sent to Cannes. The film will be removed from the list of Cannes. A film director has received a notice. If a film is released, it could be a law and order issue.”
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj remains an important person in the cultural and historical identity of Maharashtra. As the situation comes out, both the supporters and critics of the film are waiting for further government action.
The artists of ‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’ include Krishak, Sushma Deshpande, Kailash Waghmare, Snehlata Tagde, Priyadarshan Jadhav and Bharat Ganeshpur. Directed by Raj Pritam More and produced by Michael Thevar, the film was scheduled to release on August 8, but its release is currently on hold.
