Has Hollywood and Bollywood assured you that a glass of alcohol calms your veins before an important moment?

For example, when Kalki Kochlin’s character Aditi is just about to tie a knot, Aditya Roy Kapoor’s Avinash gave her a glass of liquor to calm her shaking.

And this is not an isolated view – there are many other moments in movies and chains where you see the characters cutting a peg to brave a position or calm their anxiety. At least, this is the perception.

But is this really true?

Brief Answer: Like – but not long. Alcohol acts as a sedative on the central nervous system. So yes, at the moment, you can feel relaxed, your thoughts can slow down, and those butterflies in your stomach can be reduced.

But Dr. A. Rajesh, Advisor Psychiatrist at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, warns that this feeling of cool is short -lived. “The calm effect is attached to a spike in your blood alcohol material (BAC),” they explain. “Once the BAC starts falling, kicks the symptoms of depression. That is why some people feel even more worried after some drinks – it is trying to balance your body.”

Truth about alcohol and anxiety

Although this idea may seem fun, if you are someone who turns to alcohol to avoid anxiety or nervousness, then there is bad news here: “Alcohol can offer temporary relief, but over time it spoils the anxiety,” Dr. Rajesh says.

It plays with your brain chemistry, especially serotonin such as neurotransmitters, which regulate your mood.

And when the effect stops? Welcome to ‘Hangxiety’-it is not a combo of a worrying and worrying accident.

Can it cause dependence?

Many people do not realize that when their timely drinks become rituals. “Every time you drink to reduce anxiety, you train your brain to consider alcohol,” Dr. Rajesh has warned.

Over time, your body creates a dependence, which means that you will need more alcohol to get the same effect.

In this way the dependence creeps quietly.

Long term risk

The effect is not only psychological – relying on alcohol disturbs your entire body. Chronic use uses brain structure, and studies suggest that it increases the risk of disorders such as generalized anxiety and terror attacks.

The World Health Organization laces alcohol as a toxic, psychiatry and dependence-producing material as a group 1 carcinogen.

Another one who states in the study that alcohol is responsible for at least seven types of cancer, including common people such as intestinal cancer and female breast cancer.

HCL Healthcare, a general doctor from Mumbai, Dr. Nazia Dalwai says that recent research on the effects of alcohol shows any form or volume that is associated with harmful consequences.

Healthy ways to manage stress that actually work

Good news? Without arriving for a drink, performance is better, safe ways to handle anxiety or social stress.

  • Try to pay attention to deep breathing, progressive muscles, or yourself.
  • A strong physical foundation also helps: good sleep, regular exercise and balanced nutrition all low stress levels.
  • If anxiety begins, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) may be a game-changer.
  • Create time for calm activities – yoga, meditation, or even jernling can help restore your sense of control.
