On June 11, 2024, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration issued a statement recalling specific instant ramen types produced by the popular Samyang Foods brand. According to the food agency, the levels of capsaicin in them are “so high that they pose a risk for the consumer to develop acute poisoning”. The three recalled ramen products are Buldak 3x Spicy & Hot Chicken, 2x Spicy & Hot Chicken, and Hot Chicken Stew. Retailers have been instructed to stop selling any of these items still on the shelves. In addition, the Danish Food and Drug Administration has encouraged consumers (who have already purchased them) to discard them or return them to the retailer.

“The amount of hot pepper in the noodles tested is much higher than in chilli chips, which have previously caused poisoning injuries in children in Germany,” the food agency said in the statement. The authority underlined the potential impact on the health of children and vulnerable adults. It highlighted that possible symptoms of excessive chilli consumption could include “burning sensation and discomfort, nausea, vomiting and high blood pressure.” The statement posted on X also made reference to social media challenges where young users test their spice tolerance by consuming such products.

“We have learned that the Danish Food Authority has recalled the products, not because of any problems with their quality but because they were too spicy,” the brand told the BBC. Samyang Foods said this is the first time the company’s products have been recalled because they were deemed too spicy, reports The Guardian. They also said they would consider understanding local regulations in export markets.
