Channing Tatum recently opened up about his experience playing Gambit, as he made a surprise cameo appearance in the recently released superhero movie Deadpool & Wolverine. Although Tatum ultimately landed the role of this X-Men character, he was long attached to the reportedly planned Gambit solo movie, which suffered multiple delays and was ultimately cancelled.
Channing Tatum was one of the actors who had the opportunity to make a cameo in Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s latest record-breaking Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Deadpool & Wolverine. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Tatum explained how he felt upon joining the cast as Gambit, a role he’s wanted to play for years. “I’m not going to bore everyone with what we were trying to do with our (Gambit) movie, but it was an origin story that we were doing,” the actor told the publication.
He explained that his goal was to create something that would be in the world and “play with Deadpool”, saying that you could put Deadpool in many scenes with other MCU characters, and he could easily “make fun” of them the whole time. Tatum added, “But he wouldn’t do that because Ryan loves comics, and he loves Marvel.”

The Blink Twice actor also expressed that he’s open to playing almost any version of Gambit and is “hopeful” about the possibility. He mentioned that he’s also “in talks” with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, saying that he’d like to be a part of any MCU project, and that just getting the chance to dress up as Gambit again would be enough for him.
Tatum described his cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine as “a wish come true” moment and said it was an opportunity to dress up as his favorite superhero character. He said standing next to co-star Jackman felt like he was “out of body”, and that it was “wild” to be there as Wolverine, Blade (Wesley Snipes), Elektra (Jennifer Garner) and all the other characters.

Last month, Channing Tatum shared an emotional post on Instagram along with an old photo of himself standing with Ryan Reynolds. The actor wrote a long note expressing his gratitude to Reynolds in the caption of his post, in which he mentioned that he thought he had lost the chance to play Gambit forever. The actor wrote that the Green Lantern actor fought for him and the character, adding, “I’ll probably always be indebted to him.”
Deadpool and Wolverine is now playing in theaters.
