Canadian spy chief made two secret visits to India in 2024 over Nijjar case

Canadian spy chief David Vigneault visited India secretly twice in 2024 to discuss the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Referring to the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that his government is committed to the safety of Canadians.

David Vigneault, the head of Canada’s intelligence agency, made two secret visits to India earlier this year to discuss the issue. According to news agency PTI, sources reveal that other Canadian officials also visited India to discuss various aspects of the Nijjar case.

According to the news agency, the Indian government has refrained from commenting on Vigneault’s visits.

A Canadian government official confirmed that Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) Director David Vigneault visited India but refrained from discussing the specifics of the meetings.

“We can confirm that CSIS Director David Vigneault has visited India, but we do not comment on the nature or substance of closed-door meetings,” the official said, PTI reported.

During those visits, Vigneault shared findings from Ottawa’s investigation into Nijjar’s death, which was launched last September after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raised allegations of possible Indian involvement in Nijjar’s killing. In May, it was revealed that Canada had arrested four Indians in the Nijjar murder case – Karanpreet Singh (28), Kamalpreet Singh (22) and Karan Brar (22). According to PTI, while Canada has stressed the importance of an independent RCMP investigation, reiterating its commitment to truth and accountability, the Indian government has refrained from commenting on Vigneault’s visits.

Sources revealed that other Canadian officials also visited India to discuss various aspects of the Nijjar case.

Tensions between the two countries have increased due to India’s concerns over Canada’s handling of Khalistani elements.

India has urged Ottawa to protect its diplomats amid threats from Khalistani groups.

In response to Trudeau’s allegations, India sought a reduction in Canada’s diplomatic presence, resulting in the withdrawal of 41 Canadian diplomats and their family members from India.
