In short

  • Nine people have been hospitalized due to contaminated broccoli sandwich in Italy
  • Italian Health Ministry raised antitoxin from poison control center
  • Officials discovered contamination to protected broccoli in oil

The outbreak of a tragic botulism in southern Italy claimed the life of a 52 -year -old artist and composer Luigi de Sarno, when he consumed a broccoli and sandwich from a food truck in Diyamte, Koseenza. Nine others, including two teenagers and several family members, were admitted to the hospital, two in critical condition.

Authorities discovered contamination to the protected broccoli in the oil used in sandwiches. These jars are now remembered nationwide, and the food truck in question has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

Since most of the Italy’s hospitals do not stock Botulism antitoxine, Italian Health Ministry raised serums from the poison control center in Pavia. Military aircraft were rapidly used to distribute antitoxine to hospitals, including Annunjita Hospital, where the victims were admitted.

Understand botulism

Botulism is a rare but life-threatening disease caused by neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. These toxins target the nervous system, causing symptoms such as blurred vision, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing or speaking, muscle paralysis and respiratory failure.

Without rapid medical intervention, the condition can be fatal in about 5% to 10% of cases.

According to the World Health Organization, “Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that produces dangerous toxins (botulinum toxins) under low oxygen conditions.”

How does botulism spread?

It is usually produced by consuming improperly protected or canned foods. Low-acid environment-like oil or water stored vegetables-especially c. Botulinum spores allow spuns to grow and produce toxin. In this outbreak, broccoli sandwich became contaminated through such conservation errors.

Why is it so dangerous?

Symptoms of botulism may increase rapidly and are often first non-specific, which delays diagnosis.

The paralysis effect of toxin can compromise on breathing, demanding immediate access to mechanical ventilation and antitoxin. Lack of easily available antidote in hospitals can also increase risk.

Risk in ‘healthy’ food

Dharna vs. reality: foods such as broccoli, especially as nutritious, can pose a serious risk if improperly processed. Protection in oil is common in the preparation of home-style or artisan, inadvertently c. Can create a breeding ground for botulinum.

Proper food storage, especially in low-acid or anaerobic conditions, is important. Even on a small scale or seems safe preparations should follow strict hygiene and conservation standards.

In India, botulism is often associated with infants, in which some cultures, as part of a tradition, are fed honey for less than 12 months. Honey, also, can cause botulism, which can cause swelling, which can then attack the veins of the body.
