Delhi has a new fine dining destination that cannot be missed. Located in the opulent Shangri-La, New Delhi, Belisario is not your ordinary restaurant. It is a doorway to a bygone era, a place where echoes of the Byzantine Empire come alive through vibrant flavours, a luxurious setting and a touch of history. Curious, I embarked on a culinary adventure to experience this unique dining destination first-hand. The name Belisario itself gives a glimpse of the restaurant’s theme. Named after the famous Byzantine general, Flavius Belisarius, it signifies a journey filled with conquest, resilience and a touch of chivalry.
The promise was clear as soon as I entered the entrance. The outdoor area, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, sizzled with the energy of the live DJ, perfect for a relaxed evening. However, the Delhi heat drew me towards the indoor seating area.
Stepping inside was like stepping into a Byzantine mosaic. The decor was a mix of history and splendor. Iconic symbols like the double-headed eagle and intricate geometric patterns adorned the walls, telling stories of the empire’s rich heritage. Plush velvet and brocade fabrics adorned the seating area, while ornately carved wood and shimmering metallic accents added a touch of imperial grandeur. The whole ambiance transported me to a bygone era, setting the stage for a truly spectacular dining experience.
Bellisario’s menu was a treasure trove of Mediterranean cuisine. Inspired by the cooking of the Byzantine Empire, it wove together flavors from the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and North Africa.
But before immersing myself in the food, I decided to have a look at the cocktail menu. Being a gin enthusiast, I opted for the “Zen Garden”. The name was apt – the blend of elderflower, rosewater and betel leaf was a symphony of floral notes that put me in ‘zen’ mode. But to my surprise, the other cocktails tasted just as good. The Gin Bramble is also a must-try.
With my taste buds awakened, I turned my attention to the food. The Prawn Black Pepper was a fantastic starter, full of the spicy aroma of chilli. This was quickly followed by the Cheese Chilli Mushroom Dim Sum, a creamy dish with mild spice that is a winner. Both dishes were beautifully presented and full of flavour, setting a high standard for the main course.
For my main dish, I opted for Tortellini Ricotta Spinach. The presentation was a sight to behold – perfectly sized tortellini drenched in a fabulous tomatillo sauce. But the real magic came from the very first bite. The pasta was cooked to perfection, providing a wonderful texture to accompany the creamy ricotta and spinach filling. The tomatillo sauce, with its subtle spiciness, brought all the elements together in a harmonious dance of flavors.
No meal is complete without dessert, and Bellisario’s did not disappoint. As a self-proclaimed creme brûlée lover, my expectations were high. Thankfully, the coconut creme brûlée at Bellisario’s lived up to its reputation. The caramelized sugar crust gave way to a creamy, coconut-infused custard, providing a perfect ending to this delicious culinary adventure.
Bellisario is a place where history and gastronomy meet. Excellent service, a great atmosphere and, of course, great food combine to create an unforgettable dining experience. So, if you are looking for a unique culinary adventure, a journey through time and taste, Bellisario is waiting for you.
