Being a pop star and a top performer can be a tough job! Recently, global star Ariana Grande talked about the changes in her voice and how voice inflections differ between men and women when it comes to music. In an interview for the Shut Up Evan podcast with Evan Ross Katz on July 9, Grande said that it’s “a normal thing that people do, especially if you have a big range.”
In addition, the singer revealed how playing Glinda in the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked changed her voice. “I trained my voice for a long time doing different things before I moved to London and all of that; muscle memory is a real thing,” the star said.
Ariana Grande fans noticed a change in her voice in June
In June, a clip of the singer went viral when her voice appeared to fluctuate significantly from high to low during an interview on the Podcrushed podcast with Penn Badgley, who recently co-starred with Grande in the Boy Is Mine music video.
After fans teased her about the change last month, Grande first addressed her voice in a TikTok comment, clarifying that the fluctuation was due to habit (speaking like that for two years) and vocal health.
“I consciously change my vocal placement — higher or lower — depending on how loud I’m singing,” the star added. “I’ve always done that. Bye.” Also, speaking about vocal health on Shut Up Ivan, she said that maintaining vocal health and pitch is a lifestyle that requires a lot of practice and this is something simple you can try.
Ariana Grande criticises double standards in her voice
Grande said in a conversation with Shut Up Evan podcast host Evan Ross that she feels there is a double standard when it comes to transformative acting roles.
He said that male actors often receive praise for their transformation and dedication to their craft, particularly with comments such as, oh wow what a great artiste or actor, but if he sneers as Glinda or something similar, the reaction is different, often with netizens calling him pretentious or fake and questioning his talent.
Meanwhile, the pop singer’s seventh studio album Eternal Sunshine was released on March 8, 2024, and the album earned 58.1 million streams on Spotify globally, setting the record for the most streamed album in a single day in 2024.
