Apple Cider Vinegar vs Lemon: Which is Better?

Ayurvedic health coach Dimple Jangra highlights three key differences between lemon and apple cider vinegar as digestive foods for your body.

1. Vitamin C Content

One lemon contains about 33 mg of vitamin C, which helps boost immunity against diseases like common cold and cough. However, according to experts, the vitamin C in apple cider vinegar is negligible as it is already a fermented product.

2. Digestive benefits

Lemon helps alkalize your system. When consumed with water, it stimulates bile production, improves digestion and increases the absorption of nutrients from food. In contrast, apple cider vinegar is acidic. Experts suggest consuming it after meals to stimulate metabolism, control sugar spikes, and create a feeling of satiety, aiding weight loss.

3. Digestive effect

In Ayurveda, Jangra describes lemon as being sattvic in nature as it promotes mental clarity and vitality. However, apple cider vinegar is considered tamasic because it is fermented twice. Additionally, consuming apple cider vinegar on an empty stomach can destroy the mucus and good fats present on the walls of your stomach and intestine, potentially leading to long-term problems like nausea, heartburn, and acid reflux. On the other hand, lemon is alkaline when consumed on an empty stomach, but consuming it in excess can destroy tooth enamel.

Which is better on an empty stomach?

It depends on your health. Both lemon and apple cider vinegar are often consumed mixed with water, but they have different effects. As Jangda explains, lemon is a safer option because apple cider vinegar breaks down the mucus layer. However, if you have a sensitive stomach, lemon water should also be consumed in moderation.

Why?

Because lemon water has its own dangers. Holistic health coach, Luke Coutinho highlights the groups of people who should avoid lemon water on an empty stomach.

1. People with acid reflux

Lemon water may worsen GERD symptoms such as heartburn for some people, while others may find relief. It is best to keep an eye on your body’s reaction before making a decision.

2. Dental Sensitivity

The acidity of lemon can destroy enamel, especially in people with sensitive teeth. To reduce the risk, use a straw and rinse your mouth after drinking lemon water.

3. Allergy Concerns

Drinking lemon water on an empty stomach may cause a rare citrus allergy, which can cause swelling, rashes, or breathing problems. Seek immediate medical attention if any symptoms occur.

4. People with joint pain

The acidity of lemon can increase joint pain in people suffering from arthritis. If symptoms worsen, discontinue use and consult a doctor.

in conclusion:

Deciding what to start your morning with depends on your body and overall health. If unsure, try each option a few times and analyze your body’s reaction.
