Amul issues detailed statement after customer finds centipede in ice cream tub

Recently, a Noida woman claimed that she found a centipede in an Amul ice cream tub, which sent the internet into a tizzy. She shared a picture of the item on Instagram and wrote, “It was really shocking to find a worm inside my @AmulIndia ice cream. Quality control and food safety should never be compromised. @FSSAI publication should take some legal action on such incidents as the number of these is increasing day by day.” According to PTI, food safety officials in Noida have begun investigating the matter.

Amul’s official customer care account responded to the post, saying, “You are requested to please DM us your address and phone number. Our team will get in touch with you.” On June 17, 2024, the brand released a detailed statement. Amul said, it “deeply regrets” the inconvenience caused to the customer due to the incident. According to the statement, brand officials received his contact number at 3:43 pm on June 15.

In the statement, the brand said, “The Amul team was continuously trying to contact the customer and the meeting was allowed only after 9:30 pm on the same day despite the customer giving multiple interviews to the media during the same period. During the interaction, the customer was informed and assured about Amul’s state-of-the-art ISO-certified plants which are automated and undergo several stringent quality checks before offering any product for sale to esteemed customers. We also invited the customer to visit our plant to reassure him about the quality processes being followed at the manufacturing plants.”

The brand said that it requested the customer to hand over the ice cream tub for examination. However, “the customer refused to hand it over. Unless the pack containing the complaint is taken back from the customer, it will be difficult for us to investigate the matter and hence difficult to comment specifically on the issue including the pack and supply chain integrity,” the statement said. The brand also said that it will “investigate the matter from all angles and will again get back to our customers with the findings after receiving the ice cream tub for analysis”.
