Asked if it was disappointing that discussions about female artistes still revolve around their weight rather than their work, Anand said it reflects the mindset of the society.
“Yeah, and I think it’s still happening because society still reflects it. Society still believes, and still sees my weight before my job. So As long as that happens, I will keep doing this (As long as this happens I will keep doing this) To prove that it’s wrong.”
Writing better roles for women
The actor believes that filmmakers still have a long way to go in writing meaningful roles for women who do not fit into the mold of the traditional heroine. “There’s still a long way to go when it comes to writing better roles for women. That’s what I’m trying to do. The more people see me, the more their minds open up. They’ll start believing that they can write something better for this actor, for this role – something that utilizes her skills rather than just her body.
Talking about signing the film, Anand admitted that he had mixed emotions due to the subject matter the film touches upon. “It’s a big upheaval because it’s a huge responsibility if you’re taking on something that is so vulnerable, that you stand against all the time. Something that you know is not right. Something that should not be done in society.”
He added, “But then I thought that it’s still being done in society, and we’re just showing society what their reality is. And if they’re hurt by it, that means they’re doing it too.”
beyond fat shaming
According to Anand, appearance-based judgment is about much more than weight. “It’s not just about fat shaming. People shame others for being too thin, for the color of their skin, for not having hair, for how they look, what they wear, what brand they wear – everything. The day that stops, which honestly may never happen, what we can do is present these issues in a different light and show people what is possible.
Reflecting on how women are being written about in mainstream cinema today, Anand said that she has seen a gradual change.
“Things are slowly changing. Earlier, characters like Miss Mimi were shown just eating burgers, or Sweetu was shown eating double chocolate frappuccino and muffins. No stand was taken for those characters. But with Sweetu, things started changing. Then came Gayatri Rocky and Rani’s love storyWho stood up for herself,” she said.
The actor said, “Today women have agency. There is a community standing behind them. They are given space and they own that space. It is a slow process because there are so many people in this country and the world, but change will eventually reach everyone.”

We were prepared for it, so we didn’t give it too much importance. The more you pay attention to trolls, the more they grow. If you don’t accept it, that’s just life. Some people get trolled, some can handle it, some can’t. We’re just showing the reality of a person who goes through it.
