In short

  • For teams with 150 or more employees, the target limit has been increased by 15 to 20 percent
  • This change comes only a few months after going to about 4,000 employees of Meta.
  • Meta is focusing on strict performance management

According to an internal memorandum, Meta is planning to rate more employees as fewer artists in the middle year review of the company. Business Insider. Managers have been asked that the company’s performance system has a high number of employees in the lowest rating-learnage category. For teams with 150 or more employees, the target limit has been increased by 15 to 20 percent. Last year, it was 12 to 15 percent. This change comes only a few months after the Meta employees leave, or 5 percent of its workforce, many of which were given status as low artists.

Meta is focusing on strict performance management. The company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, earlier said that he wanted to “raise the bar on performance management.” The memorandum shared on the internal platform of Meta on 14 May made it clear that the upcoming reviews are not just regular check-in. “Midyear performance is an opportunity to decide to get out of the review process,” it said. While Meta said “no company-wide performance will end,” managers are expected to take action if no one is meeting expectations.

There are also clear rules of how managers can identify employees for possible performance cuts. These include obtaining ratings below in the upcoming review, formally disciplined in the last six months, or a case of employee relationship, which usually includes a performance improvement plan earlier this year. The review process will start from June 16, and discussion between managers and employees is expected to be held in July and August.

Meta is also involving former employees in these review numbers – people who have either left or let them go before. These cases are being classified as to what Meta is called non-Regrantable Atrition, which means that the company does not see those roles important for its work.

This is not the first time Meta has increased its performance standards. At the end of 2022, the company increased the share of employees marked as an underperformer by 16.5 percent, which was 7 to 12 percent from the earlier range. The company also told the managers that deciding which employees fall into which ratings group.

All these steps are part of the Meta plan to reducing the cost and reopen their workforce after many people in previous years. Many technical companies are doing something similar. For example, Microsoft recently cut 6,000 jobs to reduce middle management and focus more on engineers.

Meta did not respond when Business Insider asked for a comment on the latest changes.
