The grace of French film star Grard Depardieu is now complete.

Depardiyu went down from the peak of French cinema on Tuesday as he was convicted of sexually assaulting two women on a film set in which he acted in 2021 and sentenced to 18 months suspended jail. They were also fined a total of 29,040 euros (about $ 32,350), and the court requested that they be registered in the National Sexual Criminal Database.

The 76 -year -old actor has been convicted of catching a 54 -year -old set dresser and 34 -year -old assistant during filming by “Less Whats Warts” (“Green Shutter”). The case was widely seen as a major post-#Metu Testing on how the French society and its film industry addressed allegations of sexual misconduct which included major figures.

Depurdiyu, who denied the allegations, did not attend the hearing in Paris. Depardieu’s lawyer said his customer would appeal to the decision.

“This is the victory of two women, but this is the victory of all women beyond this test,” said Set Dresser’s lawyer Carine Duru Dibolt. “Today we expect to see the end of impurities for an artist in the cinema world. I think with this decision we can no longer say that he is not sexually abusive. And today, as Cannes Open Film Festival, I would like the world of the film to leave an idea for the victims of Grard Depardedu.”

Accused by more than 20 women

The court was made up of a panel of three judges, concluding that the explanation of Depardu in the court was “ineffective” and “not reliable” and emphasized the “continuous, repeated and certified announcements” of both allegations.

The court also stated that the two plaintiffs had faced with “aggressive” defense strategy “to humiliate them based on comments.” The judges therefore admitted that the comments of the lawyer of departedu in the court damaged the accused and justified high fines.

Depardieu’s lawyer, Jrmie Assuse, regretted that the court “admitted that the allegations are an additional attack … which is no longer accepted now, even in this type of test.”

Two accused testified in court

The dresser of the set described the alleged attack, saying that the actor squeezed it between his feet as he had squeezed it in a narrow corridor.

The other plaintiff, one assistant, said that Depardyu caught her buttocks and her breasts during three separate events on the film set.

Associated Press does not identify by the name of those who say they were not sexually harassed until they agreed to be nominated. Neither the woman has done so in this case, although one has been depicted.

“I have moved very much,” one of the plaintiffs, the set dresser, told reporters after the verdict. “I am very, very satisfied with the decision. This is a win for me, in fact, and a big progress, a step ahead. I think justice was done.”

Some express support for departedu

Some figures in the French cinema world have expressed their support for Depardiyu. Actor Vincent Perez and Fanny Ardant were among those who took seats in their favor of the court.

The French media reported last week that Depardeu was shooting a film directed by Ardant at Azores Islands in Portugal.

The actor may soon face other legal proceedings.

In 2018, actor Charlotte Arnold accused him of raping his home. The case is still active, and in August 2024, prosecutors requested that it go for a test.

For more than half a century, Depardyu stood as a huge person in French cinema, a Titan that is known for its commanding physical present, instinct, sensitivity and notable versatility.
