Apple is planning to bring cameras in its airpods and Apple watch, with a major change of how its wearbals work. According to a report by Bloomberg, these camera-equipped models are expected to debut around 2027, which introduces new ways to interact with equipment using AI and spatial awareness rather than photography.
The company is allegedly developing custom chips for each product. The name of a chip coden will power “Nevis” apple watch, while “glani” is called chip for new airpods. If the chips are ready at the beginning of the year, Apple can launch these wearbals only in 2027.
Unlike traditional use cases, cameras are not being added to click photos or to make facetime calls. Instead, they are to collect visual data that will power on-device AI features. For Airpods, Apple is working on integrating the infrared cameras that can improve spatial audio when added with devices such as vision Pro. These sensors can also support the gesture recognition by tracking hand movements.
On the other hand, Apple Watch, a camera may see embedded in the display or can be placed near the digital crown on the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra. These additions may be enabled that Apple reportedly refers to as “visual intelligence”-offering real-time environmental understanding and clever directions based on what is visible around the user.
