Chinatown screenwriter Robert Towne recently gave fans an idea of ​​a possible prequel. The 1974 film starring Roman Polanski and Jack Nicholson was a huge hit at the time.

Robert Towne is the screenwriter of the 1974 film Chinatown. The American screenwriter and director is known for writing films such as The Last Detail and Shampoo. David recently spoke about a series that will serve as a prequel to Chinatown.

In an interview with Variety, Towne revealed that all the episodes of the show have been written. He also revealed that Netflix will handle the project. Robert also spoke about his experience working with David Fincher.

“Working with a force of nature like David Fincher, while sometimes humbling, is never less than enlightening,” Towne explained.

Robert explained how he and David agreed before joining the project not to copy Noah Cross, who was the main antagonist in the original film.

“But we wanted to keep in mind that the crimes that history considers monstrous are those that will not remain in the past but will insist on coming into the future,” the screenwriter explained.

What will the Chinatown prequel be about?

Robert Towne revealed that the show will focus primarily on the relationship between the young Gittes and Lou Escobar. The screenwriter explained how “enlightening” it was to learn the characters’ backstories, especially Escobar’s. Towne also revealed that the prequel will take place in Los Angeles.

He explained how he is attracted to the young Jake Gittes. The screenwriter explained the reason behind this and said that it is Gittes’ bravery. Robert explained how Jake does not play by the rules and loves to be in control.

Netflix has not yet released any statement acknowledging the development of the series. Even when reports surfaced of the show being in progress, the streaming platform refrained from commenting.
