Iran’s long rivalry timeline with the United States

Relationships between Iran and the United States – once strong partners – often have been mistrust and sometimes hostile since Iran’s 1979 revolution.

Here are some major dates:

1953 – The US Central Intelligence Agency helps to overthrow the popular Prime Minister of Iran, Mohammad Mosadeg, which restores Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

1967 – The United States provides nuclear reactor and rich uranium fuel to the United States. The Iran signs the nuclear indiscriminate treaty, allowing it to allow a civil nuclear program in 1968, but is not a military.

1972 – US President Richard Nixon visited Tehran to strengthen security relations between countries – part of a policy to make Iran and Saudi Arabia “twin pillars” to include Soviet effects in the Middle East.

1979 – Iran’s Islamic Revolution forces Shah to flee. Ayatollah Ruhollah returns from Khomeini exile and becomes the supreme leader. The students confiscated the US embassy in Tehran and took the staff hostage.

1980 – The United States cuts down diplomatic relations with Iran, seizing Iranian property and banning most trade with it. A hostage rescue mission ordered by President Jimmy Carter fails. The hostages are released a few minutes after stepping down under the Carter.

1983 – Lebanon’s Hizbullah Group, established and supported by Iran, has been accused by the US on bomb attack attacks on its Berut Embassy and Marine Barracks that kill about 300 people, mostly Americans. Hizbullah has said that other groups were responsible.

1984 – The United States restores relations with Iraq, giving it diplomatic support in a war against Iran.

1986 – US President Ronald Reagan reveals a secret weapon deal with Tehran in a violation of an arms Ambargo.

1988 – The US Navy destroys two Iranian oil platforms and immerses a frigate in vengeance to damage an American vessel colliding with an Iranian mine. American warship Vinken accidentally shot an Iranian passenger aircraft over the Gulf, killing all 290.

2002 – President George W. Bush declared Iran, Iraq and North Korea a “axis of evil”. US officials accused Tehran of operating a secret nuclear weapon program.

2003 – After the US invasion of Iraq, Iran -backed Shia Muslim militia works widely in parts of the country and increases stage attacks on US forces.

2011 – FBI says it has exposed an Iranian conspiracy to kill the Saudi ambassador in Washington. Iran denies any participation.

2012 – US law gives US President Barack Obama, who offered to expand one hand. If Tehran “rejects his fist”, the power to approve foreign banks if they fail to significantly reduce Iranian oil imports, Iran causes economic decline.

2013 – Hassan has been elected President of Iran on a platform to improve his relations with the spiritual world and promote the economy.

2015 – Iran, including the United States and six major powers, agreed to a nuclear deal to curb Iran’s nuclear work in return for relief of limited restrictions.

2016 – Iran released 10 American sailors which ended in Iranian regional water. The United States and Iran swap prisoners.

2018 – US President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal and resumed economic sanctions on Iran.

2019 – Oil tankers are attacked in the Gulf in May and June. The United States convicts Iran, a charge Tehran refuses.

2020 – The United States kills the Islamic revolutionary guard core, which emphasizes the head Kasssem Solimani with a strike in Iraq. Iran attacked the Iraqi base with missile attacks with a residence of American soldiers, injuring around 100.

2022 – Major protests Iran. The United States bans the institutions that say that the cracks are involved.

2025 – Trump threatened to bomb Iran, if he does not make an agreement with Washington at his nuclear program. Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says that any attack on his country will be “a strong mutual blow”.
