The 2001 classic Lagaan remains one of the most acclaimed films in Aamir Khan’s career. However, while filming, Aamir allegedly had several disagreements and big quarrels with director Ashutosh Govirikar, which he felt that the story had “lack of logic” in the story. A special concern was why his character kept an eye on a clearly an eye despite a conspiracy against the background of water scarcity.
In an interview with a very filmy recently, Aamir Khan shared that he had a difficult time to understand why his character, Bhuvan, a film set during a drought, appeared clean in Lagaan. He said that Bhuvan remembered how Bhuvan managed to shave despite water scarcity, interrogating director Ashutosh Govarkar.
However, Ashutosh allegedly advised him to ignore such logical details. Aamir mentioned that this caused a hot debate between them, as he said that the villagers get angry by maintaining a clean form in such circumstances, looking at the strict situation.
The PK actor mentioned that he never understood the argument behind the verdict and remembered Ashutosh’s response when he raised his concerns.
According to Aamir, Gowariker simply said that he liked how Aamir looked and wanted him to maintain that appearance in the film, does not want to focus on the argument behind it. Aamir admitted that although he eventually gave, he was quite upset about it.
To compromise, he started shaving at night so that when he was on the set, a little shade would appear. He said that in those days when he forgot to shave before night, he would be disappointed by himself. However, he admitted that this concern could be more in his mind, as he was not sure if the audience also watched in detail.
Released in 2000, Lagaan gave a significant turn in Khan’s career. He followed it with a more influential film, which was the first in Hindi cinema portraying realistic stories about modern characters.
Recently, showing this phase in an interview, Aamir mentioned that after the success of both Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai, the industry began to experience them differently. Since they did not find much fitting details, they eventually called her “perfectist”.
