
India has expressed concern over Pakistan’s hospitality towards fugitive preacher Zakir Naik, Foreign Ministry (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has underlined what it reflects about Pakistan’s approach to shelter to a wanted person, especially former Prime Minister of Naik Naik’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
During his weekly press briefing on Friday, Jaiswal was asked about India’s approach to extended hospitality for Naik, despite India demanding his extradition to face justice. “This is not the first time he is treated in Pakistan,” said Jaiswal.
He said, “It shows what kind of approach his hosts have and what it means to us, and what it means in the matter of supporting that person so,” he said.
According to a report by the Express Tribune on March 18, Naik met former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz at his residence in Raiwind.
During the meeting in the property of the Sharif family, scholars and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders allegedly discussed various issues. However, the Express Tribune said that no official statement has been issued regarding his talks.
Meanwhile, former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Hafiz criticized Naik last week after meeting Naik. Hafiz shared photos from his meeting on social media, causing a widespread backlash.
According to the Express Tribune, Hafiz posted, “Happiness meeting with Zakir Naik,” was taken together in a restaurant, together with their images.
The Post gave strong reactions online, many people questioned his decision to meet Naik. According to the Express Tribune, a social media user commented, “This is one of the reasons why the Indian cricket team and the Government of India do not want to come to Pakistan.”
Most criticism was done by Indian citizens. Naik is currently wanted in allegations of alleged money laundering and provocative extremism by Indian authorities.
Earlier, on October 24, 2024, Bishop Reverend Azad Marshal, President of the Church of Pakistan, wrote a letter to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari. He expressed concern about the comments made by Zakir Naik about the Christian community and his beliefs during his recent visit as a state guest in Pakistan.
