James Van Der Beck has recently opened up about how his fight with cancer changed his marriage, family life and identity. He was detected stage 3 colorectal cancer.
Celebrating his 48th birthday, in an emotional Instagram video, former Dawson’s Creek Star reminded of last year’s difficulties, describing it as the most difficult of his life.
He opened his video, “This has been the hardest year of my life, and I wanted to share something I learned with Y’All.”
Van Der Beak discussed that, during most of his career, he identified with work as an actor – something that he never satisfied. Gradually but of course, he directed his energy to personal roles and, for his spirit of his goodness, allowed himself to embrace the role that is a dedicated husband, father and breadwinner.
He said, “I can define myself as a competent, love, strong, supporting husband, father, provider, the steward of the land on which we are very lucky to live,” he said, “and for a long time, it felt like a really good answer to the question, ‘Who am I?” ,
However, the outlook was shaken after his cancer diagnosis last year. Facing his own mortality rate, Van Der Beak spoke of “arriving with the nose with the nose”, assuming that the harsh treatment made him unable to play parts that he was proud for a long time.
Van Der Beak, who shares six children with his wife Kimberly, said that he could no longer be a husband who was helpful for (his) wife, “or” now “may not be a father who can lift his children and put them and stay there for him.”
His illness also made him unable to work, so that he could be prevented from earning money – a situation that was particularly difficult to him. In the past, the actor has sold the movie to the Merchas to assist in the medical bill, and explained the experience and questioned his feeling of self-values.
The One Tree Hill actor eventually came to an intense insight: “I am worthy of God’s love, just because I am present. And if I am worthy of God’s love, should I not be able to be myself?”
Emotional introspection dawson’s creak actor’s transition prevents measuring their value to accept their inherent value by their professional and family status, even the physical and emotional fighting of cancer has greatly affected their lives. James van Der Beak and Kimberly have been happily married since August 2010 and have a family of six children.
