Kerala Health Minister Veena George has recently said the ICMR report on the cancer crisis “frightening.” Major Medical Panels of India – Indian Council of Medical Research – released an analysis on cancer incidents in the country.

Veena George said that the state government launched a 12 -month campaign on February 4, which was marked as World Cancer Day to create awareness for better and rapid detection in cancer matters.

“We have more than 62,000 cancer cases every year. People are coming to the hospital only during the third and 4th stages. Our question is why you wait for so long? We need to come out of that stigma, so we have this campaign,” he said.

According to ICMR report, three out of five people die of cancer after diagnosis. “About three out of every five persons in India faced death after cancer diagnosis, as for the mortality rate (916,827) ratio according to the Globocaine 2022 incident (1,413,316),” according to the study published in the Lancet.

Researchers mentioned that India ranked third in cancer events globally after the United States and China, and finished second in mortality after China.

The analysis has predicted that India is facing a burden of a malignant cancer, while the mortality has increased in the last two decades, they will grow between 2022 and 2050 to 64.7 to 109.6%.

“The country has been designed to face a malignant challenge in the coming years due to infection of middle-class groups of current reproductive-age population, with a significant part of cancerous incidence and mortality centered in middle-aged and slightly healing age groups.

To address the burden of cancer, ICMR researchers emphasized the need for concentrated intervention to reduce the event rate.
