An 18-year-old New York University student allegedly stole $51,000 worth of luxury items from her roommate, including a $23,000 ruby ring, clothing, handbags and other jewellery, and then attempted to sell them online, the New York Post reported, citing court documents.

Aurora Agapov has filed a lawsuit against her roommate Caitlin Fung, alleging that she hatched a “scheme” to steal her ex-wife’s jewelry and high-end designer clothes and handbags and sell them through a consignment retailer called ‘The RealReal.’ The items stolen by Caitlin Fung include items from luxury fashion brands such as Chanel, Gucci and Bulgari.

Aurora Agapov, originally from London, is the daughter of Andrey Agapov, the CEO and chairman of RusoRo Mining, which operates and acquires gold mining and mineral properties. She reportedly has ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, reports the New York Post.

Arts student Aurora Agapov – whose father is reportedly worth around $75 million – and Caitlin Fung were “very good friends” before the alleged incident came to light. Citing a Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit, The New York Post reported that Aurora realised something was wrong last month when she discovered some of her belongings were missing while she was finishing her first year.

According to court documents, the Russian mining tycoon’s daughter became suspicious after finding a receipt from ‘The RealReal’ in her roommate’s pocketbook that mentioned Aurora Agapov’s missing items.

“My heart sank,” Aurora Agapov, 19, told The New York Post, recalling how the relationship between her and first-year political science student Caitlin Fung “got better in the second semester.”

Realizing her roommate might be swindling her, Aurora Agapov asked Caitlin Fung to spend the night somewhere else and moved her belongings out of her dorm at New York University. Agapov couldn’t sleep that night, telling the New York Post that the items her roommate stole meant a lot to her because they were gifts from her mother.

The lawsuit alleges that Caitlin Fung sold a $13,000 Bulgari necklace for $2,485 and a $2,000 Chanel Strauss bracelet for $175. According to the lawsuit, other items listed for sale but not yet purchased include a Solange Azagury ruby ring worth $23,765, a $3,300 Celine Nano tote bag and a $4,000 Chanel purse, The New York Post reported.

The London woman alleged her 18-year-old roommate also stole her Celine and Gucci handbags, but the lawsuit states the items were returned to her.

Caitlin Fung was arrested on May 2 this year on charges of third-degree grand larceny but was later released, pending a criminal case against her. Aurora Agapov has sought $51,000 in damages and the return of her unsold property through a lawsuit.

London resident Aurora Agapov said in court documents that when she went to The RealReal outpost to retrieve her belongings, an employee there told her that Caitlin Fung’s mother had come to collect her belongings a few days earlier.

In a statement to the New York Post, The RealReal said they require consignors to confirm if they have the right to sell the items and that they are not stolen. The luxury resale platform said they “act swiftly” by removing items from the site and launch an investigation if any reports of theft are received.
