Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is recovering after surgery at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. The actor was attacked by an intruder during a burglary attempt at his Bandra home, leaving him with multiple injuries, including a knife getting stuck in his spine.

The attack happened late at night, Saif Ali Khan was taken to the hospital around 3 in the morning. Describing the severity of the injuries, Dr Nitin Dange, the neurosurgeon who led the surgical team, said: “Saif Ali Khan has suffered a major injury due to a knife being lodged in his thoracic spine. We have attempted to remove the knife and repair the leaking spinal cord. Had surgery to correct the fluid.”

Dr. Neeraj Uttamani, another member of the medical team, gave an update on Saif’s condition and said that Saif Ali Khan’s surgery was conducted successfully and he has been shifted to the ICU.

“He will probably be moved to the ward in a day or two. The injuries were deep, but our team has managed the situation well,” said Dr Uttamani.

Understanding Spinal Fluid and Its Importance

Spinal fluid, also known as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), is a clear liquid that flows in and around the spaces in the brain and spinal cord, forming a cushion to protect these delicate structures. serves as.

It is also present between the two meninges, which are thin layers of tissue that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord. CSF helps remove waste, deliver nutrients, and maintain brain pressure balance.

Cerebrospinal fluid is produced by the choroid plexus, a specialized tissue located within the ventricles (hollow spaces) of the brain.

One of the important aspects of Saif Ali Khan’s surgery included repairing the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak.

CSF leak occurs when fluid leaks out through a crack in the dura, the outermost protective layer that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.

This may be due to trauma, surgery or spontaneous causes. Symptoms of CSF leak include severe headache, runny nose, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and vision problems.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, untreated CSF leaks can lead to meningitis, a dangerous infection of the brain and spinal cord, making prompt repair important.

Dr. Dange shared that the knife injury had caused leakage of spinal fluid, which required immediate action to prevent further complications. Surgery included removing the knife, sealing the dura to prevent leakage, and addressing other injuries.

Dr. Dange said, “Timely intervention was necessary. Saif Ali Khan’s condition is now stable and he is responding well to the treatment.”
