The Weeknd certainly knows how to embrace the artistic ventures he’s been a part of. Similarly, despite the reaction to The Idol, he expressed “proud” of it, while acknowledging that perhaps it could have been made “differently”.
In a Variety profile of The Weeknd (published January 10), he said of the series, “I’m really proud of it – we all are.” The musician shared that his cast and crew were “great” and he made some incredible friends and he loved seeing everyone thrive.
Recalling that experience, the Lost in the Fire singer shared that it was not fortunate that the show did not receive a warm response, but they knew that what they were creating was “something provocative and dark”.
The Weeknd added, “Maybe it could have been told differently, maybe not.” He expressed that it was a much bigger deal than he expected and that nothing that was put out would “connect” and that was okay.
Speaking about Backslash, he said, “Of course, it gets to you – I’m not saying I wasn’t affected by it,” adding, “I’m just saying I didn’t take it personally. Like, there’s no one to catch you, you know? I like reading criticism, even if some of it doesn’t seem constructive.”
He also talked about his upcoming album (to be released on January 24) Hurry Up Tomorrow. The musician shared that he doesn’t expect it to be a hit with everyone.
The Weeknd said that some people may not like it but that’s not the reason he does it, it’s because he’s “an artist”, that’s how he feels and that’s what he wanted to say.
