Kannada actor Upendra Rao is back in theaters with his new film UI. This science fiction action film, released on December 20, has been directed by Upendra himself. It is struggling with other new releases, Viduthalai Part 2, Marco and Bachala Malli at the Indian box office.
UI aims to earn Rs 5 crore on its first day in India
Based on advance bookings, UI is eyeing an opening of Rs 5 crore in India. The Kannada science fiction film is certainly Upendra’s biggest solo film in the lead role. In general, the sci-fi genre is not considered a massive moneymaker as Indian audiences prefer more contained content in theatres. Despite this, the Upendra starrer is expected to do well during the Christmas and New Year season, provided it receives favorable reviews in the coming weeks of the holiday season.
2024 will end with a bang for Kannada film industry
Next week, Kannada star Kiccha Sudeep is bringing his film Max, which will release in theaters on December 25, coinciding with Christmas. Not only Upendra’s UI, it is also expected to get a big opening on the first day.
It is safe to say that 2024 is ending on a positive note for Kannada cinema. UI and Max, which are coming in the last two weeks of the year, have high hopes of emerging as the top two grossing films at the Karnataka box office.

A brief information about UI
Set in a fantasy world, UI explores the psychological conflict between a king and an extraordinary person. It shows his journey of becoming a dictator by taking over the entire city. It is produced by G Manoharan and Srikanth KP.
The recently released sci-fi action film also stars Reshma Nanaiah, Sadhu Kokila, Jisshu Sengupta, Murali Sharma in lead roles. Other star cast includes Indrajit Lankesh, Nidhi Subbaiah, Om Sai Prakash and Guruprasad.
With UI, Upendra Rao returns as a director after almost a decade. He had previously directed Uppi 2 in 2015 in which he played the lead role. As an actor, Upendra was last seen in his 2023 film Kabzaa.
