A live donor heart was transported 20 kilometers from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Okhla Road, New Delhi along a green corridor in just 27 minutes.

A life-saving operation has given a 59-year-old woman suffering from end-stage heart failure a new chance at life.

The patient was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart muscle weakens, making it difficult for the heart to pump blood efficiently.

Despite having a pacemaker implanted years ago, his condition deteriorated and he had to remain bedridden. A heart transplant became his only viable option.

The donor, a 43-year-old man from Nagpur, died due to brain stroke. His family agreed to donate his organs.

The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) coordinated the allocation of the donor heart, which was obtained from Kingsway Hospital in Nagpur on December 9.

Dil Ki Yatra started at 12:53 am when it was cut in Nagpur. It was brought to Delhi by air ambulance, which landed at 3:19 am.

From there, Delhi Traffic Police facilitated a green corridor, a dedicated, traffic-free route, to ensure that the organ reached Fortis Escorts Heart Institute by 3:57 am.

A team of highly skilled surgeons led by Dr. Ritwik Raj Bhuiyan and Dr. Milind Hote performed the transplant.

Dr Bhuiyan highlighted the precision and coordination required for such a critical procedure: “This transplant was a life-saving intervention. With careful planning and collaboration between the medical teams and officials, we ensured seamless transport of the donor heart. We We are grateful to the donor’s family for their selfless act.”

Dr. Hotte said, “Organ donation is a profound gesture that changes lives. The success of this transplant reflects the power of collaboration and advanced medical capabilities.”

According to doctors, the recipient, who had been waiting for a donor for more than a decade, is recovering. This case highlights the vital importance of organ donation and the life-saving potential of medical advances.
