Google has announced an extended software support policy for its Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold series, offering users an additional two years of Android OS upgrades and security updates. This major change means that these devices will now get a total of five years of software support, up from the previous three-year policy. The move is expected to come as a relief to Pixel users who can now enjoy longer access to the latest Android features and improved security.
According to Google’s updated support page, the list of devices eligible for this extended update cycle includes the Pixel Fold, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, and Pixel 6a. Extended software support starts from the date the device was first made available on the Google Store in the US. For example, the Pixel 6, which was launched in October 2021, will now receive updates until October 2026. This means that the device is also expected to receive Android 17 OS.
The Pixel 6a, which was released in July 2022, will continue to receive updates until July 2027. If the Android 18 stable update is released by June 2027, the Pixel 6a may also be eligible for it. Similarly, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, launched in October 2022, will also get five years of support, with their updates extended till 2027, which will potentially make them eligible for Android 18. Pixel 7a, which was introduced in May 2023. It’s still a relatively new device, so updates will likely continue for the next several years.
Google has also shared a timeline for the next major Android update. Android 16 is expected to roll out in the second quarter of 2025, with another update planned for the second half of the same year. Speaking of which, older phones like the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series have already received the Android 16 developer preview and will see the stable version sometime in mid-2025.
In India, the Pixel 7 is currently available via Flipkart at a starting price of Rs 30,999. Pixel 7a is listed on the same platform for Rs 27,999 and Pixel 6a is available for Rs 43,999. Surprisingly, the Pixel 7 Pro is selling at almost the price of the Pixel 6a. It is listed for Rs 44,999. The Pixel Fold was not launched in India and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the first foldable series that Google has introduced in this market.
