Nikhil Advani is an Indian filmmaker who made his directorial debut with the evergreen film Kal Ho Na Ho. Talking about his debut film as a director, he revealed that neither Karan Johar was the writer of the film nor did he narrate the story to actress Preity Zinta. Apparently, when he was doing Koi Mil Gaya, it was Hrithik Roshan who narrated the script to him.
While talking to Mirchi Plus, Nikhil Advani told many unknown things about his films. This is where he talks about Kal Ho Na Ho, which is his first foray into the entertainment industry as a director. One of the interesting facts revealed by him was that it was not him or Karan Johar who narrated the story of the rom-com to Preity Zinta.
Going back in time, he remembered the time when Preity was doing Koi Mil Gaya with Hrithik Roshan. She was shooting the film in Calgary, Canada. Hence, it was the Fighter actor who narrated him the script of Kal Ho Na Ho. “We weren’t even there,” he admitted, adding that it was Shah Rukh Khan or KJO who called Preity and informed her that Hrithik had heard the script. He asked the actress whether she would have any problem if he narrated it to her, to which Advani replied, “The film had its own destiny.”
He further shared another anecdote which speaks volumes about the greatness of Yash Johar who produced KHNH. The Patiala House producer said that he shot the film for nine days in Toronto. But she was sad. When Yash Johar saw him in such a condition, he asked the reason behind it.
This is when Nikhil expressed his dissatisfaction over writing a film about New York and shooting it in Toronto. Hearing their concerns, the famous producer packed up and flew everyone to New York.
Even decades after its release, Kal Ho Na Ho has a huge fan base, who flocked to theaters when it was recently re-released in limited screens across the country. This cult romantic drama became popular among cinema lovers, making its re-release a success.
