Will Smith really knows how to give due credit to the people who have influenced his life, one of them being his The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air co-star, Alfonso Ribeiro. According to Entertainment Weekly, the Bad Boys star talked about it in a new episode of the Vice documentary series, Black Comedy in America.
Smith shared that there have been two formative relationships that have completely “transformed” her life. The first name he took was none other than Jazzy Jeff (with whom he earned his first Grammy for rap for Parents Just Don’t Understand).
The Pursuit of Happyness star further added, “Where you meet someone who understands you in a way other people don’t understand you. And they are able to understand you, then prepare things for you to create and shine and explode. And Alfonso was definitely that guy.
For those who don’t know, Smith (who played Will Smith) and Ribeiro (who played Carlton Banks) appeared on the infamous show from 1990 to 1996.
The actor shared that when Ribeiro came to audition, there was no doubt because he got it. He praised him, saying that no one works as hard as his former co-star.
“We call it the ‘comedic part,'” Smith expressed, “where someone knows they’re going to try a joke and they go out there with it and risk everything.” The actor shared that Ribeiro used to say that someone has to be committed so that the writer knows that it doesn’t work.
According to the report, in the episode, the I Am Legend star described her co-star with “red lining.. giving everything” on Tuesday, even though they weren’t supposed to shoot until Friday. Smith expressed that “the willingness to crash and burn” is the only way one can be funny.
Both the actors have really entertained the audience with their performances, and their hard work over the years till today is a true testament to their relevance in the industry, be it in films or on television.
