‘He’s not going to give a fuck’: When Matthew McConaughey turned down a US million role for this reason

Matthew McConaughey belongs to the category of actors who have had an interesting career. This all became possible when he decided to start saying no to films that he felt were stuck in one type of genre.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, while chatting with Nick Kyrgios on the Good Trouble Podcast, McConaughey candidly explained that he wanted to take some time off in his career to reorganize things. At that time he became notorious for playing lead roles in rom-coms, for which he was also well paid. Although he was comfortable there, he still wanted to explore other styles.

This decision led him to move to Texas and he made a pact with his wife that he would only say yes to the roles he wanted to play. This also included him saying no to a US$14.5 million action comedy film.

The Dallas Buyers Club star shared that the decision he made was probably seen as the most rebellious move in the industry because it signaled, “He’s not cheating.”

He continued to the host, “And when you find someone who doesn’t lie, there’s something charming about that. I think that’s what made Hollywood go, ‘You know what? Now that’s a new unique idea,” he added. “That’s a new bright idea.” I used to drool when those offers came in, man. And I just did little by little and did one thing after another and did as much work as I could and liked it and felt every part of it.

Looking at his filmography, it is clear that he had taken the right decision and how dedicated he was to that decision.

The How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star won critical acclaim for roles in Interstellar, Dallas Buyers Club (which also earned him his first Academy Award), True Detective, and many more.
