Slumdog Millionaire 2 is possibly in the works as Bridge7, a newly formed Los Angeles-based production company, has acquired the rights to a sequel as well as television rights to the 2008 Oscar-winning film. Producer Swati Shetty and CAA agent Grant Caseman are behind Bridge7, their first major acquisition from UK-based production company Celador.
Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle and starring Dev Patel in a breakout role with Freida Pinto, was an international hit in 2008. It won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Score.
For those unaware, Patel plays the role of Jamal and Pinto as Latika, telling the story of Jamal, who tries his luck in the India version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Jamal’s ascent to the top of the game show is interspersed with flashbacks to his childhood, but a poignant tale of survival and love against the backdrop of the war-torn city of Mumbai looms over everything. Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and Mahur Mittal will also be seen in the film.
Paul Smith, President of Celador International, said, “I am delighted that Swati and Grant have chosen the Slumdog Sequel to launch their newly formed company. Celador looks forward to working with Bridge7 as they follow Jamal’s journey of discovery. The next chapter is unfolding on the screen.”
According to Deadline, the sequel will tell what happens in the next chapter of Jamal’s life, though it is not known if any of the original cast will reprise their roles. Shetty and Kesman said they are excited about the sequel, highlighting that it is a timeless story with universal appeal.
In a statement, he said, “Some stories stay with us long after the credits roll, and Slumdog Millionaire is undoubtedly one of them. Its narrative is universal, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries, and it’s stories like that.” “It embodies what we love—that connecting entertainment with deeply human experiences.”
While Kessman brings significant industry experience as a longtime CAA agent, Shetty comes with a 25-year career as a producer, with his most recent project being Netflix’s Wedding Season. The release date of Slumdog Millionaire 2 is not known yet, but keep an eye here for further updates.
