The success of Kiran Rao’s Missing Ladies is not limited to India. This film, which was recently released in Japan, is doing great business there. According to the latest trade reports, the rural comedy-drama has overtaken the lifetime earnings of Pathan and Salaar: Part I – Ceasefire in Japan, making it one of the most successful Hindi films ever there.
The highest-grossing film in Japan remains SS Rajamouli’s RRR, starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR in the lead roles. However, the success of Lapata Ladies in Japan is noteworthy, considering that the film is already campaigning for an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Film category.
Directed by Kiran Rao, the film grossed over 50 million yen – Rs 2.75+ crore in 45 days at the Japanese ticket window. The Rajamouli-directed film grossed approximately 75 million yen, while the Salman Khan starrer made 80 million yen in Japan upon release.
