Under the agreement, GAIL Gas will construct a 7.5 km pipeline to deliver around 32,000 standard cubic meters (SCM) of natural gas per day to Vedanta’s Jharsuguda smelter, the world’s largest aluminum plant, ET reported earlier.
This is a five-year contract and will primarily support a new 430 kilo tonne per annum (KTPA) cast house designed to produce billets and other high-value aluminum products.
The initiative aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions and increase productivity, aligning with Vedanta’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The transition to natural gas is expected to begin by the end of 2025 and will result in a reduction of approximately 47,292 tonnes annually. CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e), previously reported by ET.

Shares of Vedanta fell 0.87% on BSE on Tuesday to Rs. closed at 443.25.
